ROYAL OAK - Shirley Shields was ready to test her new knowledge of healthy grocery shopping.  Families from Orchards Children’s Services, a foster care and adoption agency in Southfield, Michigan, were selected to attend a Nutritional Walk Through Tour and in-store dining experience at Meijer Supermarket in Royal Oak, Michigan on July 7th.  The hour-long Nutritional Walk Through Tour was given by Christine Eagle, a Dietitian and Clinical National Manager at Beaumont Hospital. Mrs. Eagle gave tips for selecting fruits, vegetables, breads and understanding food labels. Prior to the event, younger family members were given an activity worksheet to encourage participation.  During the in-store dinner, Meijer Supermarket Lines Manager Joe Leone explained Meijer’s Nu Val Nutritional Scoring System, a food scoring system displayed on shelf tags, scale labels and other areas in the store that assist customers in comparing their food choices.  At the end of the event, each family received a gift bag that included a Meijer Supermarket $50.00 gift card.
This event was part of the Food First/Family Preservation program in partnership with Cafe’ Cortina, Beaumont Hospital and The Adrian Tonon Project.
“Our goal is to focus on the importance of healthy eating, healthy living and encourage families to enjoy healthy meals together. We hope to leave an impression on the many foster families that Orchards represents.” says Adrian Tonon.     END
