As one of six siblings, “Joe” faced unique challenges after his five siblings were adopted. Joe struggled to cope with his experiences and find ways to express himself. This ultimately resulted in his living in an institutional setting, and, at times, requiring hospitalization to help him cope. It was during this time in Joe’s life when the Orchards Adoption Resource Consults (ARC) team became involved.
Through the Michigan Adoption Resource Exchange (MARE), a pre-adoptive father, “Brian” connected with Joe’s adoption worker. Joe’s worker and an Orchards ARC worker arranged an introduction with the family. After several successful visits, including weekend off-campus outings, the team determined it was the right time for Joe to transition into the pre-adoptive foster home, and the family signed an intent to adopt.
Over the following six months, Brian remained patient and committed to Joe, working through Joe’s adjustment to his new home and two hospitalizations. Brian never wavered in his decision to love and support Joe through this transition home. Joe’s support team met regularly to ensure the family had the tools and support needed for success. ARC assisted Joe in finding healthy outlets when he was overwhelmed with feelings, which became valuable coping tools for him.
Now, with adoption paperwork filed, the bond between father and son is rooted through the love, trust, and connection they share. Brian is also committed to maintaining relationships with Joe’s biological siblings and their adoptive families, helping preserve those important lifelong connections.
