Orchards Annual Appeal

Elise and Emily, fraternal twin sisters, have walked a challenging path together. From a turbulent adolescence to becoming thriving college students, their journey showcases the transformative power of resilience, determination, and the unwavering support of Orchards Children’s Services.

At just 14, the twins faced significant life change after their mother’s parental rights were terminated. The sisters entered care and soon after were placed with a foster family. Together, they navigated the foster care system, eventually transitioning to Orchards’ Young Adult Voluntary Foster Care (YAVFC). Throughout their journey, Orchards Children’s Services provided support. From essentials like birth certificates, driver’s licenses, and medical coverage to holiday food distributions and clothing, Orchards helped Elise and Emily build a stable foundation as they transitioned into adulthood.

After four high schools and through perseverance and the encouragement of their community, the sisters graduated high school with Emily as her high school’s valedictorian. Both sisters highlight the positive impact of their caseworkers, with Elise particularly remembering Alanna’s encouragement and guidance. Despite the disruptions, one constant remained: each other.

A pivotal moment for Elise and Emily came when they were introduced to the Orchards Promise Scholarship, which supports Orchards clients in obtaining a degree in higher education. Both sisters embraced the opportunity to attend a four-year school. Now college roommates, attending Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU), Elise is pursuing a degree in Education, focusing on early childhood special education, and Emily is majoring in Social Work with a minor in Sociology.

For Elise, teaching is more than a career, it’s a calling. “I have a passion to teach and a love for kids,” she says. Inspired by her high school and college experiences, she dreams of supporting special education students in Michigan. Emily’s path is equally impactful. Motivated by a desire to help others, she envisions a future in addiction prevention, using her degree to provide support and stability for individuals in need.

Life hasn’t been without obstacles but with determination and support, Elise and Emily are now thriving, making friends and excelling academically. Looking to the future, Elise envisions herself as a teacher, living with a loving family and a house full of pets. Emily hopes to have a stable career in Social Work. Driven by their past experiences, Elise and Emily are committed to giving back, inspiring others with their stories of resilience. “Things get hard, but you can always make it through if you don’t give up,” Elise affirms. Emily echoes this sentiment, encouraging others to stay focused and embrace the support around them. Both sisters intend on supporting their younger sister’s college journey as she pursues her dreams.
Emily and Elise’s journey is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the profound impact of a supportive community. With Orchards Children’s Services by their side, they are well on their way to achieving their dreams and making their mark on the world.
